Tips for Replacing Quartz Watch Batteries

Jun 17,2023

Quartz watch batteries have a lifespan and normally need to be replaced after about 2 years of use. Replacing the battery is a strange thing for many people, so it will be difficult. Replacing a quartz watch battery can be a piece of cake if you follow the right steps.

1. Prepare the necessary tools

Before getting started, make sure you have the right tools. You'll usually need a small screwdriver, preferably a set of precision screwdrivers, tweezers, and a new replacement battery. Using the correct battery type for your watch model is crucial, so check the manufacturer's specifications or consult a professional if you are unsure.

2. Prepare a clean operating environment

Find a well-lit and stable surface to work on. Lay down a soft cloth or mat to protect the watch from scratches and provide a clean area to place components.

3. Remove the back cover

Most quartz watches have a snap-on back. Look for a small indentation or notch on the back of the case that indicates where you can pry it off. Carefully lift and remove the rear cover using a suitable tool such as a small screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the gasket or scratch the housing.

4. Identify the battery

Once you open the back cover, you'll see the battery inside the watch. Note the type and size of the battery and its location in the battery compartment. It can be helpful to remember the orientation of the battery or take a picture for reference.

5. Take out the old battery

Use a pair of non-magnetic tweezers to gently lift the old battery out of its compartment. Avoid touching the battery terminals or applying excessive pressure to the watch movement.

6. Clean the contacts

Check the battery compartment for any corrosion or debris. If you notice any buildup, clean the contacts with a clean cloth or a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Make sure the contacts are dry before proceeding.

7. Insert a new battery

Remove the new battery and align it properly according to the manufacturer's instructions or your previous reference photo. Use tweezers to place the battery into the compartment, making sure it makes proper contact with the terminals. Be gentle so as not to damage the battery or watch.

8. Test the watch

With fresh batteries installed, lightly press any available button or turn the crown to see if the watch starts ticking and the hands move. If the watch won't start, double-check the location of the battery and its contact with the terminals.

9. Install the back cover

After the watch is working properly, carefully align the back cover with the case. Apply even pressure around the rim until you hear or feel a click, indicating that the cover is securely in place.

10. Set the time

If the watch stops while changing the battery, follow the watch's instructions to reset the time and any other functions.

While replacing a quartz watch battery may seem simple, there may be some problems in practice. If you're having trouble changing the battery, we recommend consulting your local watch repair shop.
